How Is Skill Development Transforming India’s Jute Industry?

Ghanshyam Sarda

Ghanshyam Sarda, the dynamic leader of the Sarda Group of Industries, has unveiled plans to establish a dedicated training centre to enhance the skills of inexperienced jute workers. This initiative aims to bolster the jute industry and support economic development by equipping workers with essential technical expertise.

Headquartered in Kolkata, the Sarda Group is a diversified conglomerate with business interests spanning jute, real estate, and information technology. With a robust turnover of Rs. 2,000 crore, the group operates eight jute mills, collectively producing over 500 tonnes of jute goods daily. Its latest project, a state-of-the-art jute mill in Alwar, Rajasthan, represents an investment of approximately Rs. 100 crore.

The Sarda Group pioneered professional training facilities for jute mill workers in India. Mr. Sarda, a strong proponent of skill development, has consistently emphasized the importance of relevant training in boosting productivity and operational efficiency.

Reflecting on the state of the jute industry, Mr. Sarda noted that the sector, despite its century-long history, had failed to establish competent training programs for workers. His vision aims to address this gap and rejuvenate the industry by fostering technical and educational development among employees.

In addition to his efforts in the industrial realm, Mr. Sarda champions environmental sustainability by promoting biodegradable materials such as jute. He also spearheads philanthropic initiatives, including the establishment of the Ram Dev Sarda Vidyalaya in Purnea, Bihar. Managed by the Chandrakala Devi Sarda Charitable Trust, the institution aligns with the late Mr. Shiwlal Sarda’s philosophy of giving back to society and nature. Serving nearly 5,000 students annually, the school underscores the group’s commitment to societal and environmental well-being.

With approximately 50,000 employees in West Bengal, the Sarda Group stands as one of the region’s largest employers, contributing significantly to local economic growth and social welfare.

Mr. Ghanshyam Sarda continues to inspire many with his forward-thinking leadership. At a recent IIEST College Alumni Association event, he underscored the importance of actionable knowledge, stating, “Knowledge is not power; it is potential power.”
